The European Delegation Law 2024 (Law No. 91 of 13th June 2025), adopted by the Chamber of Deputies on 11th June 2025, has been published in the Official Gazette. This bill changes national legislation to conform with the Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) rules set by Regulation (EU) 2023/2411.
The next legislative decree will establish the rules for registering new PGIs for artisanal and industrial products beginning 1st December 2025.
This new type of protection, which will apply throughout the European Union, will cover artisanal and industrial products such as wooden objects, jewellery, textiles, lace, cutlery, glass, porcelain, ceramics, leather, and hides, in addition to the protections already in place for geographical indications in the agri-food sector. This will make it easier to promote local and regional regions and products globally.
The implementing legislative decree must:
identify the office in charge of managing the national phase of PGI registration, as well as the authorities responsible for verifying and monitoring the Regulation's application;
introduce specific rules on the sanctions applicable in the case of a breach of the EU Regulation, and adopt all necessary steps to ensure its application;
regulate the PGI registration procedure by developing an efficient and rapid administrative framework for submitting and reviewing Italian applications for geographical indications.
