Transport, signs of recovery after paralysis of mobility caused by Covid

The transport system is slowly recovering after the paralysis of mobility due to measures against the spread of covid-19. According to the data contained in the Quarterly Report of the Observatory on mobility trends prepared by the Ministry of Sustainable Infrastructure and Mobility - IV quarter 2021, 2021 saw a marked improvement in the situation for all modes of transport compared to 2020, with increases for the various sectors ranging between 15% and 40%. Compared to 2019, the trends appear varied, with road and rail passenger traffic still declining and heavy vehicle traffic, on the other hand, exceeding pre-pandemic levels. In particular, in 2021 the traffic fleeting street and above all that railway on base anniversary has been still clearly inferior to that pre-pandemic, with reductions compared to December 2019 including three 10% on the Anas network and over 60% on high-speed rail services. In December 2021 there was a worsening compared to the situation in September, when covid-19 infections were lower, while for passenger transport on iron, which in 2020 had fallen more sharply, there was an opposite trend in December 2021.

On the other hand, heavy-duty road traffic has shown an acceleration of travel, which last year reached and sometimes exceeded pre-pandemic levels. In Sardinia the light road traffic has marked a decrease to the -4% regarding the levels pre pandemic, while an increase of 5% of the heavy road traffic has been recorded.

In local public transport, passenger demand in 2021 was still 35% lower than in 2019. In the regional railway transport the fleeting traffics have turned out in decrease of approximately 43% regarding 2019. Regarding the aerial traffic, in the period January-November 2021 has been recorded a reduction of 60% of the fleeting traffics and 2% for the goods regarding 2019. The marine traffic on the ferries in the 11 months has been inferior of 12% while the cruises have had a decrease of 82%.
