In support of the implementation and management of the various information systems, the Region of Sardinia has developed, over time, important investments of infrastructural nature that today see it at the forefront of the adoption of the most modern technological solutions.

The infrastructures of the Internet network are to be identified in two different types:

1) those used for the web connection of the offices of the Regional Public Administration;

2) those placed at the service of the citizens and businesses to ensure access to the Internet and services provided through the network itself.

The Autonomous Region of Sardinia has a Regional Telematic Network (RTR), designed to meet the needs of the regional administration, its agencies, and the regional health service companies. Its construction started in 2005 and includes a fibre optic backbone that develops over the entire regional territory and connects, with a closed loop path, nine access points distributed in each provincial capital. The urban networks (Cagliari, Sassari, Tempio Pausania and Lanusei) and the accesses of the offices located in the surrounding are connected to the fibre optic system.

In the future, thanks to the extension of the RTR, the service will be extended to the wholeSardinian Public Administration; through progressive infrastructural investments, reliable and performing services will be guaranteed, with less costs and scale economies.

The Region is involved in the development of the applications of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) both in improving the quality of the services offered by the public administration and in the infrastructural opportunities for new settlements. The goal is to achieve total coverage of the territories, through public support of infrastructures where the market cannot provide them.

The connectivity system, extended to industrial poles, research centres, companies, health units, etc, determines a link between the "Sardinia system" and therefore a new competitive condition for development policies. The promotion of ICT for competitiveness and productivity has the strategic objective of orienting the entrepreneurial system towards investments in the high-tech sectors and towards process and product innovation for the creation of intangible infrastructures and digital services.

Concerning the digital convergence industry, the regional policy aims to increase the capacity to use, access and usability of companies with respect to intangible infrastructures, digital services and, at the same time, developing digital contents, applications and services.
